we went camping, part one

Dan wanted to go camping for his Father's Day present so we obliged. I sure love these beautiful mountains of ours. It was shady and cool, my favorite. The wind picked up during the evening but luckily we didn't blow away.

It's too bad I deleted the self-timer app from my phone or else we could have had everyone in this shot. It's also too bad there was zero reception where we were and I couldn't reload it. It's also too bad I don't have a fancy camera with a tripod but whatever. We made do.

I can't help but laugh when I look at this picture. I kind of feel like it should make it onto that awkward family photos website. Dan's stance. The way I'm leaning into him. Dan and I wearing matching t-shirts from the kids' elementary school. And Cate is just all kinds of crazy. I have no idea what she was doing. I'm kind of sad Danny's not in it or I would have considered using it as our Christmas card photo this year.

I must say I haven't looked so good in a picture in a long time. No double chin. No wrinkles or gray hairs (that you can see). No flabby upper arm (thanks for covering that up, Dan). And honestly, do I even look like I was less than a week away from turning 40? Ok. I'm done bragging about myself.

Hey, Dan. You've got a little something on your lip. heehee

This was Cate's first time camping, Danny's fourth. On the drive up I looked back and saw her just staring intently out the window. Then she said something about how this would be her first time eating a roasted marshmallow. To her, that's camping. Marshmallow. Hotdog. Tent. She's easy to please.

She only ate one marshmallow though. And I think I even had to finish it off for her.

Ah, the joys of camping in the summer when you can't darken the tent to fool the kids into going to bed early. Dan fell asleep at 8:00. They told "spooky" stories for a while (Cate's were all about rainbows and unicorns and princesses). Then we got back out of the tent and wandered around collecting rocks and sticks for another hour and a half until it was sufficiently dark.

I told them stories for another half hour to get them to fall asleep. This camping stuff is hard work.
