I am the entertainer

We play games. Lots and lots of games. All the time.

One morning Danny forced me to play games with him for an hour and a half. An hour and a half straight! That's a lot of game playing. (You know what I mean by forced right? He asks nicely and he's so stinkin' cute and I don't want to wash the dishes anyway so we play games.)

I'd like to ask is this normal? are all you other moms of little kids forced to play games every morning before school? how do you get anything else done? do you just tell them no? am i the only one? but who am I kidding? I'm pretty sure there's only about 3 of you left reading this blog anymore.

It's fine. Hopefully they're learning something from all this game playing. Neither one of them has learned how to be a good sport yet so I guess we've still got work to do.

Cate and I played Candy Land this morning. That's her game of choice almost every time. She likes to get it all set up so that she can stack the deck. She puts the cinnamon roll on top. (If you know Candy Land then you know that's the bonus card that's closest to the finish line.) Then she puts the deck down carefully, tells me to not shuffle them and sweetly smiles and says, "Youngest first, right, Mom?" And then the game is over in about three turns since she's practically at the finish line before I can even get started.

This morning she switched things up a bit. I keep telling her to not cheat and put the cinnamon roll on top. Well, she put the popsicle on top of the deck instead. That's the bonus spot before the cinnamon roll. Sneaky girl. I had to laugh though.

If I'm going to be forced to play games with my kids every morning (and afternoon and night some days) then I'm just hoping Santa puts a few new ones under the tree.

Candy Land is killing me. Slowly but surely.

Chutes and Ladders isn't doing much to prolong my life either.

p.s. I love my children dearly and I'm glad that they want to spend so much time doing fun stuff with me. The dirty dishes can wait. So can the laundry and the vacuuming and the cruddy toilets. Just wait until they grow up and don't want to have anything to do with you. Enjoy it! They're only young once. Someday they'll want to play Monopoly and you'll be begging them to play Candy Land instead! I get it.

p.p.s. Danny loves to play Sorry. He pronounces it "soary", just like his good ol' Canadian Grama Bama. Maybe it's his tribute to her. I don't know but it's cute when he does it.

You're such a good mom. I would get so bored after 20 minutes I'd give my kids some other distraction and go do the dishes.

But most of the time, the kids play together (something other than board games), or independently. I usually have to coerce them to play games with me. We played some card games tonight, though. It was nice. But we played our two rounds, laughed, had fun, then I put them to bed. My shift was over and I'm the only one working tonight. :) Mommy needs her breaks.

I despise Candyland and, while we own it, I've never played Chutes and Ladders (even as a kid myself). I love playing games, but those little kid ones kill me. We try to play games once a week - sort of a family game night thing. I try to steer the choices to cards or a junior version of a grown-up game (Scrabble, Monopoly, etc).

I'm just not as nice (or patient) of a mom as you are!

I enjoy your blog so much! My children are grown...24, 30, 32...but my sweet nephew is 3 and you give me great ideas. Like the way your son has his cards held by the egg carton...pure genius! :)

Um, no. I don't play games with my kids. They know better than to ask. I also never take them anywhere. Ever. Which makes for nice little comparison stabs when I see what awesome place you took your kids on instagram every.single.day. But I still like you. I'm secure in my crappy motherhood like that.

We play Ticket to Ride and the occasional Littlest Pet Shop game but it has been a while since we have played Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders.

We don't play games either. Too many meltdowns which led to super grumpy mom and she is not nice.
